Painting, Drawing and Art History On Location

The object of the course is for students to experience Florence, Italy and its art on their own terms learning the techniques of painting and drawing on location. This course will provide a foundation in the fundamentals of painting

and Italian art history. Using various outdoor locations as our classroom students will sharpen their artistic vision and perception. They will observe, study, paint, draw and photograph Florentine landscapes, sculptures and classical paintings in and outside museums. Students will work to create unity through architectural organization of space, light and develop realistic rendering of one, two, and three point perspectives in detail. Short and longer gesture exercises explore methods for achieving a likeness of the subject its contour, value, color, design, composition and texture. Sessions will be augmented with classical traditions as well as the creative process.

Students will work in pencil, charcoal, acrylics or watercolor. Photography will also be incorporated into the course. Students will be responsible for creating a portfolio of combined images of drawings, paintings, photography or a journal that represent Florentine art and culture. They will also be responsible for creating a theme in photographs that represent the city. Sessions will end with an informal critique.
