Painting and Drawing on Location Japan

Painting and Drawing in various outdoor locations, (in Kyoto and Nagoya) students will sharpen their artistic vision and perception of capturing images in plein air. They will observe, study, paint, draw and photograph Japanese landscapes, sculptures and classical paintings in and outside museums. Sessions will be augmented with classical traditions as well as the creative process. Artists will work in pencil, charcoal, oils, acrylics or watercolor.

 

THE OUTCOME

Participants will be responsible for creating a portfolio of combined images of drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography or a journal that represents Japanese art and culture. They will also be responsible for creating a theme in photographs that represent the city. Sessions will end with an informal critique.

The Study of Japanese Woodcuts

Study the art of Ukiyo-e and Japanese ancient techniques of woodblocking. Learn about Japanese painting, prints,  and artists' Hishikawa Moronobu, Torii Kiyonaga and Utamaro. The Art of Washi Japanese Papermaking

This class will explore old and new techniques for making paper. Students will learn the history by visits to artists' studios and demonstrations. Students will create their own creation from their handmade paper.

Drawing Japanese Anime

This class will explore the history of Japanese Anime. Trips to art galleries, museums, modern clothing stores, artist fashion studios and food markets will be incorporated to further study Anime and its relationship in today's modern mass production of art, fashion, food and culture.

Collotype Printing Process

Learn about Collotype printing, the birth of photography. Print tone photographs using inks. Visit a famous shop in Kyoto (one of the only studios in the world) still using this process today!

Bingata and Tsutsugaki

This class will study the process of the dyeing technique of Bingata and its relationship to cloth.

The Relationship of Ancient Japanese Art and Woodcuts to Modern Tattoos

Japanese ancient and modern arts (on location) will be examined, to explore the relationship of modern tattoos, irezumi and horimono symbolism. Classes includes entrance to museums and modern tattoo shops. This class includes excursions to Tokyo.

Modern Subculture Fashion in Japan

This class explores fashion exploring the Lolita, Gyaru, Bosozoku, Visual Kei, their influence on modern androgyny, music,

and their cultural birth of fashion from the stylized traditional Kimono.

ART - POLI  Kabuki in Japan

The history of Kabuki in art (paintings and prints) and role in modern dance, acting, fashion, sexuality, avant-garde theater. Class includes tickets to a traditional Kabuki and Bunraku show, plus an excursion to Tokyo.

The History and Production of Suki in Kyoto, Japan

Learn about the famous rice wine of Japan from

its history to modern production, plus experience ancient and recent brewing techniques. 

Class includes a trip the Gekkekan Okura Sake Museum and a wine tasting.
